Pick a Better Snack

On Monday we were lucky to begin our Pick a Better Snack program! Wellman Elementary first and second graders are very excited to take part in this healthy living curriculum. This initiative is organized by the Washington County Extension Office and funded by the local Wellman ALC club. The purpose of this program is to motivate students to eat more fruits and vegetables and to be more physically active.  A huge thank you to Sarah Huston for her time and energy as a Wellman Elementary parent and volunteer to bring this awesome program to us for 9 weeks! Following are the "rules" of the Pick a Better snack program. They may come in handy at the dinner table as well;)

Day 100 Celebration

It has been way too long since I have shown off the fun and learning that is taking place in our first grade classroom! Here is a look at some of the fun we had on the 100th day of school. Our first graders have really aged over the year;)

100 Days Wiser!

Air Explorations

First graders spent one of their science periods exploring the focus question, "How can water by used to show that air takes up space?" We also put our understanding of air pressure to the test to create a fountain. You can imagine the excitement!!

Breakout Box!

Our first week back together after our Christmas vacation, we all enjoyed a new first! Mrs. Seward, one of our district's Learning Design Coaches, helped us as we attempted first grade's first ever Breakout box! Breakout boxes allow opportunities for critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving, and can be used in all content areas. During our Breakout session, first graders worked in small groups and as a large group, to solve 5 clues to unlock a variety of locks. In the end we gained some new bookmarks, but the excitement as the locks began to click open was the real reward and major fun!! Be sure to ask your child about this special activity!

Santa Visits!!

I love this school! I love these kids! And I love the special rewards that we are able to earn for our respectful, responsible and safe behavior! We were THRILLED to get a visit from the man in the big red suit this morning. His elves even helped to hand out cookies and hot cocoa for us to enjoy! Before Santa left our classroom, he gifted us a new book, Zero the Hero. Which also helped us to celebrate our 80th day of learning. 80!! Time is flying!

Grandparents Day!

We were lucky to have so many special visitors with us on Wednesday, November 23rd. In our first grade classroom students and their guests worked together to create some festive turkeys!

Visitors were also teamed up and asked to participate in a short engineering challenge. Each team had 15 minutes, 100 toothpicks and 1 cup of candy corn. The team with the tallest freestanding structure when time was called is pictured below!
