Tye Dye Shirts Are a Success!

There were many parent volunteers who made our tye-dying experience a great one for the students of Wellman Elementary!  A lot of fun was had designing our own shirt through squirt bottles!

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford, one of our favorite storybook characters, turned 50 this past week!  To honor Clifford's birthday, we read many of these beloved books and wrote descriptive sentences about Clifford for a class book.  Last, we threw Clifford a 50th birthday bash with Clifford cut-out sugar cookies and sporting our Clifford birthday hats!

Apple Sandwiches

Our apple unit came to a 'yummy ending' as we cooked up some 'apple sandwiches' with our apples from the apple orchard.   Our sandwiches included peanut butter with optional granola and choc. chip toppings.

Wilson's Apple Orchard

A few pictures from our fun-filled trip to the apple orchard. The students loved the tractor named  Bessie!

We also enjoyed a chance to taste three types of apples grown at the orchard!

Apple Fun!

The feel of fall is in the air and first grade is eager to say hello to crunchy leaves and candy corn! We have enjoyed singing some apple songs together and had some fun creating our own tissue paper apples to decorate for the upcoming season. Our students enjoyed learning about the many different kinds of apples and the seasons of the apple tree. We have one last apple surprise coming on Monday!

Word Work

Throughout the first grade year, we will be working hard on adding new sight words to our reading vocabulary.  Each week, students will be introduced to approximately 8 focus words for the week.   Our goal for the focus words is to have students recognize them quickly and to read them without hesitation (within 2 sec.).  Within the classroom, we will have many different activities to reinforce the reading of these words and we encourage parents at home to also have some fun working on these words.  Ideas for word activities can include using magnet letters, playdoh, shaving cream/whipped cream, bright markers, alphabet cookie cutters, etc.

We're Up & Running!

Welcome to Wellman Elementary's First Grade Blog! Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. Droll are excited to use this online space to share important information, special events, and upcoming dates with our first grade families. We are learning as we go with our blogging, so we are open to any suggestions or questions you may have after exploring the site!

A few important things to know...

  • Under the calendar link, you can find a first grade calendar with important dates, including early outs, special school activities, and birthdays.
  • Under the 1A and 1B links, we hope to have each first grade student have an opportunity to showcase his/her work. This is something that will be coming in the near future and we will be sure to communicate when it is ready for viewing!
  • In a couple weeks, students will be given weekly spelling lists. When this happens, students will be bringing home a paper copy of the list, these words will also be updates weekly on the first grade blog. Spelling tests will be given every Friday.

We are looking forward to share our learning with you this year!
